A publishing phenomenon, A House in the Sky, has remained a Top Ten bestselling book since it’s release in 2013. Raised by a single mom in a small city, Amanda escaped the violence of her childhood by imagining herself in the pages of National Geographic magazine. As a young woman, Amanda’s curiosity led her to some of the world’s most beautiful and remote places, its most imperilled and perilous countries and then into 15 months of harrowing captivity. Working as a journalist in Somalia, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road. Amanda spent 460 days as a hostage, surviving on strategy, fortitude and hope in the face of unimaginable adversity. |

Social isolation and loneliness affect over half of seniors living in care and are a difficult challenge to solve. Many residents don’t come to programs and refuse invitations no matter what is on the calendar. Yet residents themselves represent an untapped resource to address these issues. Imagine a home where residents, with support from volunteers, are trained to build emotional connections with their fellow residents. This session will present a moral and economic case for an evidence-based innovative peer support and mentoring model that demonstrates a 60% increase in engagement of socially isolated residents and suggests significant annual cost savings.

Two-thirds of Canadians over the age of 65 take more than 5 medications, many of which have potentially negative consequences that include sedation, confusion, incontinence, difficulty swallowing and falls. Adverse reactions to medications result in thousands of emergency department visits and hospitalizations each year. These not only impact the quality of life for our residents, they also cost our healthcare system $35 million annually. Revera’s Chief Medical Officer will discuss her successful strategy for reducing polypharmacy by involving and educating all stakeholders from patients to pharmacists to physicians about the need to reduce and discontinue unnecessary and potentially harmful medications. |

We’ve often heard the adage “everyone can be a leader”, but what does this mean? More importantly, how is this relevant to you and your workplace? The most practical answer is to think of leadership in terms of character, not position or title. A leader is someone at any level who has grasped the ability to take charge of his or her thoughts, and consequently his or her actions, in any situation. We are often tested to be the best version of ourselves, regardless of our job function. Our attitudes directly impact the workplace atmosphere and the quality of our professional relationships. We should never underestimate our personal power and ability to control our reality. Are you tapping into your own innovative potential? Are you demonstrating unwavering confidence in your interactions with residents, their families, managers and co-workers? Leadership begins with taking the initiative and leading yourself first.Delivering her message with insight, wit and humor, Michelle’s energizing, informative and dynamic keynote presentation, audiences will be reminded of the power of personal leadership. They will learn strategies to take the lead, embrace any challenge and create their own outcomes, long after the event ends.
